The Downtown San Diego Partnership is launching its Make Change Count initiative, in which people can stick their spare change into the machines. The donation stations can also accept credit cards.
The program will be launched Monday with a news conference that will include Interim Mayor Todd Gloria, partnership President and CEO Kris Michell and other civic leaders.
The Downtown San Diego Partnership says the donation stations are designed to discourage panhandling by providing the public with an opportunity to donate directly to programs and services that help end homelessness.
The program is funded in part by donations from Cox Communications and IPS Group, a San Diego-based firm that makes solar-powered parking meters.
Donations can also be made at participating restaurants and shops, and online at downtownsandiego.org.
