Church volunteers will clean park, other areas

SAN DIEGO — Members of the public are invited to join more than 3,000 Rock Church volunteers who will be conducting cleanups at Balboa Park and two neighborhoods in San Diego tomorrow as part of a call to action by church pastor Miles McPherson.
Volunteers will be working at 11 sites in Balboa Park, Encanto and Chollas View during the church’s second annual Community Clean-Up. They include Starlight Bowl and the Laurel Street bridge in Balboa Park, the Euclid Avenue trolley station in Encanto and the Jackie Robinson YMCA in Chollas View.
Volunteers will be painting, landscaping and collecting trash during the four-hour cleanup, starting at 8 a.m. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. For specific meeting sites, go online to sandiegocleanup.com.
The Rock Church, based at Liberty Station, has committed 200,000 volunteer hours this year to the city of San Diego. Last year it promised 100,000 volunteer hours and exceeded that total by donating 166,251 hours, valued at $2.6 million, church spokeswoman Mei Ling Starkey said.
