The Protestant Reformation
was a watershed moment in the history of Christianity. Over the next
ten weeks, Bishop Barron will discuss what led to the Reformation and
some of the key figures, moments, and ideologies involved in it.
In lesson 1 one of this 10-part course, Bishop Barron traces the
cultural and
religious circumstances that gave rise to the Protestant Reformation in
1517. Things were brewing on many different fronts and in some way, the
reformation of the Church was inevitable.
The question of what
kind of reformation is needed was answered very differently by the
reformers, primarily Martin Luther and John Calvin, and the Church at
the Council of Trent in the mid-sixteenth century.
