Back to Etiquette Basics
Back to Etiquette Basics
I
was never taught much about etiquette growing up, in part because I was
raised in an era that thought talk of manners was elitist and
hypocritical. But then, many years ago now, my wife and I began reading Miss Manners
and discovered there is actually thoughtful social philosophy behind
the rules. From a Christian perspective, of course, good manners are one
way to love the neighbor—helping others feel comfortable, not doing
things that needlessly offend, and so forth. Once in a while, I run
across a reminder of some point of etiquette on which I might improve.
Like “How to Write an Effective Thank You Letter,”
the summary of which is “We don’t have to be great artists to send
effective thank you notes: we just need to locate and hold on tightly to
two or three highly detailed reasons for our gratitude.”
Grace and peace,
