THE WORLD CUP FINAL

Sports are present in all cultures, and soccer happens to be the most popular sport in the world. When I first came to America in 2000, it seemed to me that very few people in this country were interested in soccer. That’s no longer the case.

As the World Cup Final is played today, it is quite an event for the neighborhood despite the fact that team USA did not qualify to be in the World Cup. Watching the World Cup has brought individuals and communities together.

I find a lot of potential in that social aspect of sports. As people come together, those of us who are Christians among the soccer fans, perhaps we can take a step back, and reflect on how we could point the world to a deeper foundation for the aspirations of coming together as community: friendship with Jesus Christ.

The World Cup ends today, so let us pray to the Holy Spirit for what other opportunities, especially in our neighborhood, we could live out the public and social character of our religion.

In Christ, Fr. Carlos, O.S.A.

We, the church of Saint Patrick, in the community of North Park,
of the Roman Catholic Diocese and City of San Diego,
declare this to be our primary mission:
to come together to celebrate the Eucharist,
hear God’s word proclaimed,
give praise and thanksgiving to God,
and develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
We believe that by freely sharing our faith, talents, and treasures,
we discover Christ’s presence among us and bring Him to others.
We have a strong desire to give and receive love, service, peace, support,
and fellowship, within our families, our parish, our community, and the world.
Open to the power of the Holy Spirit, we pursue this mission faithfully and lovingly.
