THE COMMUNION OF HEARTS

I went to a dinner the other night with a good friend who I have not seen for a while. He was in town and called me to see if we could find time to break bread together. I was free so of course we got together.

I told him about the celebration of my 50th Anniversary as an Augustinian Priest. There were lots of people and lots of food and surely lots of celebrating with the Mass and conversations and laughter a plenty. He had been out of the country with his family and consequently missed the 50th. He did come to the 5:30 PM Sunday Mass so we celebrated a little late, but celebrate we did with the sacred communion of hearts.

After the Mass we went to slake the hunger of the stomach and we did a good job of it together. We caught up a little with what was happening in our lives and what the future could bring.

We shared a meal together, he gave me some shrimp and I shared my creamed spinach. We laughed, talked a little of politics and listened to each other without trying to trump “my thoughts over his thoughts,” but rather mutually respecting each other. The food and the friendship nourished our hearts and God is good! The bread and wine we began first at Mass and the food and drink at the restaurant was enjoyed by both. Christ was with us at both of the occasions — Church and Dinner.

God Bless, Fr. Michael, O.S.A.
