Wise leaders apply their best
thinking to the most important things. This is, of course, easier said
than done because of the sheer volume of things that leaders are asked
or required to think about. Because we are finite
and flawed, we have a limited amount of mental capacity. So how can a
leader create mental capacity?

Cynicism provides a way out of change — a response restating the issue,
often humorously, and allowing for a sense of intellectual superiority
before dismissing the issue out of hand. If we are honest, we must admit
cynicism is quite often a cheap substitute
for honest dialogue. What should we do about our cynicism?
