Child Care Center Was Approved!

Hello Churches!
On Tuesday June 17th, San Diego City Council approved a change in our Conditional Use Permit which enables the Rescue Mission to open up a child care center here on site. Why is this such good news?! Here at the Rescue Mission we run a program known as Nueva Vida Haven Emergency Shelter. This is a program where about 70-90 women and children are only allowed, because of licensing reasons, to be in the facility from 7pm to 7am. Mothers in this program who have non-school aged kids are forced to hang out at parks or other places while they entertain thier children unitl they are able to head back to the Resue Mission for a meal, shower, and safe place to sleep for the night with their kids. The approval of the child care center will allow the Rescue Mission to watch the children of these mothers so they can get a job or go back to school. This will be instrumental in helping these families get out of the cycle of homelessness and become self-sufficient. We give praise to our Father who made this possible and we want thank all of you for your prayers and support!

Summer Graduation

On Friday July 11th from 6:30-8pm at First Presbyterian Church (320 Date St, San Diego, CA 92101) we will celebrate men and women who have made it through our year long program here at the Rescue Mission. We have men and women who graduate from this program who have never graduated from anything before in their life so we would love to pack the house! These graduates have completed 12 months of education classes, therapy sessions, chapel, and more to get to this point. The best part is getting to hear how Christ has worked so powerfully in their lives! If you are interested please RSVP to Ryan Chambers either through email at rchambers@sdrescue.org or via phone at 619-819-1892. Hope to see you there!

Volunteer Opportunity!
Genesis Process Discipleship Group

If you are man who loves the Lord and has a heart for discipleship then we have a great opportunity for you to serve. We are looking for men to lead a group of 1-7 Rescue Mission residents through a book called the Genesis Process. The book focuses primarily on biblical recovery with topics ranging from addiction to forgiveness and hope. You do not need to be a scholar in recovery or addiction to help lead this discipleship group. The book does a good job of explaining the topics and has questions that the residents will have to answer each week. The purpose of this is to create an environment where men can be honest about their sin and be reminded of the grace we find in Jesus. The time commitment is one night a week anytime between 5-6:30pm. There are twenty chapters so it will be a twenty week discipleship program. If you are interested or have any questions please call Ryan Chambers at 619-819-1892.

Church Ambassador Program

Our mission is to spread the good news of salvation through Christ by serving the needs of the poor, addicted, abused, and homeless, thus improving the quality of their lives. We here at the Rescue Mission realize our need for churches to help with those who are less fortnate in San Diego. With over 1,500 churches in San Diego County, our goal is to involve as many of these church congregations as possible so that together we can make a difference!
WHO:
We need 1 or 2 representatives from each church to become their “Church Ambassador.” These are men and women who regularly attend their church, have a heart for the homeless and desire to help be a voice for the Rescue Mission and homeless issues.
WHAT:
The main job of our Church Ambassadors will be to:
  • Communicate the Mission’s news, volunteer opportunities and program needs to your church on a regular basis
  • Promote main events at your church such as Sleepless San Diego, Interfaith Candlelight Vigil, Graduations, etc.
  • Communicate to Ryan Chambers, the Church/Community Relations Manager, opportunities to represent the Mission to your church via church fairs, speaking on Sunday, etc.
  • Help coordinate fundraisers, donation drives, and volunteer opportunities alongside or on behalf of the Mission with your home church
  • Attend meeting every other month to discuss upcoming events, volunteer opportunities and the ins and outs of the Mission, along with updating what your church has going on for the Mission to be a part of
  • Commit to praying for the Rescue Mission on behalf of your church community
Our first meeting is scheduled for July 15th at 6pm here the San Diego Rescue Mission. If you are interested in becoming your Church Ambassador, please contact Ryan Chambers at rchambers@sdrescue.org to receive more information.

8th Annual Sleepless San Diego!

Sleepless San Diego is a fundraiser that we put on annually. This year it will be held on October 11-12 at Liberty Station. The goal of this event is not to emulate homelessness but to elevate the awareness of homelessness and to educate San Diegans on how to help. Many will choose to sleep out in a secure location within Liberty Station. Our hope is this will empower people to play a role in the issue of homelessness. Did you know that there are around 8,400 homeless men, women and children living on the streets here in San Diego?  Would YOUR CHURCH consider being a part of Sleepless San Diego to help advocate for change? Here is a video to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIr7Q7yA8RA

If your church has never been to Sleepless San Diego, this is your year to pull all ages from your congregation together to be unified and come together with a common purpose. If your church has been to Sleepless San Diego before, we challenge you to bring more people than ever before. We are creating an “experience committee” for people who have been to Sleepless to share what ways they  think it could be better and more effective. If you are interested in being a part of this committee please contact Ryan Chambers at rchambers@sdrescue.org or call 619-819-1892. Thanks!
