To Rock or Not to Rock

Rock Church’s Pastor McPherson on TV Too Much?

By Justin Powell, May 22, 2012

Pastor Miles McPherson of the Rock Church in Liberty Station went to lengths to reassure his flock on May 20. Apparently, the high-profile mega-church leader faced criticism for being too busy being all over the TV in the aftermath of Junior Seau’s death. Some grumblers reputedly felt McPherson neglected his church duties.

McPherson, a former Charger, said he was asked by the Seau family to be the master of ceremonies at the May 11 Qualcomm Stadium memorial event in honor of Junior Seau. According to McPherson, the Seaus admired how he directed the July 2010 memorial service for former Chargers coach Don Coryell at Viejas Arena.

"You may only see me out there," said McPherson, “but there is a whole team of people from the Rock that are helping, too.” He mentioned the "pervasive help" campaign the church is currently promoting, speaking of how "ministering to the community" means sometimes "ministering to a grieving family" like the Seaus. Because of the prominence of Junior Seau, the situation ended up involving a lot of time and a lot of media exposure.

The pastor then went on to sermonize in his "Exposed" talk about the dangers of being judgmental and how thinking and speaking ill of others is a sin in itself and "breaks God's heart."
