UK Catholics say 5 Anglican bishops converting

Posted: 11/8/2010

LONDON (AP) — The Roman Catholic church says five Church of England bishops are converting to Catholicism following an invitation to disaffected Anglicans from Pope Benedict XVI.

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales said Monday that bishops Andrew Burnham, Keith Newton, John Broadhurst, Edwin Barnes and David Silk have decided "to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church."

The Vatican moved last year to make it easier for traditional Anglicans upset over the appointment of female priests and gay bishops to join the Catholic Church.

The pope created a structure called an ordinariate, allowing Anglican defectors to continue to use some of their traditional liturgy and be served by married priests.
