The Prophet, Joel, delivered the Word of the Lord to a rebellious people before the Babylonian captivity. He was calling for "true" repentance. He told the people that the tearing of their garments as an outward sign of their remorse was not sufficient. "Rend your hearts, and not your garments", he said.
