The year 2007 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Charles Wesley, who wrote nearly 9000 sacred poems during his ministry. Many of these are sung today by all Christians, not just those of the Wesleyan tradition.
We will celebrate Wesley’s immense contribution to congregational song in a 3-part Festival on September 9, 10 and 12 under the theme "Music of the Heart." All four worship services on Sunday, September 9 will focus on Wesley’s hymns, including the glorious "A Wesley Hymn Concertato" sung by the Chancel Choir with brass from the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra.
On Monday evening September 10 Bob Plimpton will share with the Men’s Fellowship "The Wesleyan Revolution in Church Music" – which may surprise you with what it’s not! Meagan Todd, soprano, will sing some of the original music for familiar Wesley texts. All are welcome to attend. Dinner is at 6 p.m., followed by the program.
Wednesday September 12 Vespers will present more hymns of Charles Wesley in old and new settings; communion will be in the Anglican format which both Wesleys observed their entire lives. Rebecca Basilio, soprano, and Craig Johnson, baritone, will sing. A family-style spaghetti supper in Linder Hall at 6:15 will be followed by informal singing around the tables and a lecture by Dr. Michael Lodahl of Pt. Loma Nazarene University on "The Theology of Charles Wesley’s Hymns."
Sunday, September 9 is "Open House Sunday," when the plaza will be filled with booths representing all of our ministries. Many visitors are expected – it will be a glorious kick-off to our fall season. Watch subsequent newsletters for more fascinating details
