New Life Chinese Laundry in North Park

Peter Hui snapped a piece of brown paper off the roll on the table, deftly wrapped it around a stack of shirts and tied the package with reinforced tape. He placed it on a shelf filled with other neat packages near the front door of the New Life Chinese Laundry in North Park.

JOHN GASTALDO / Union-Tribune Peter Hui, 67, retired five years ago and sold New Life Chinese Laundry, but he still lives across the street and volunteers at the laundry most mornings.

A Chinese laundry is a rare sight today in San Diego.

But there was a time . .

“There were over a 100 Chinese hand laundries in San Diego,” says John LeeWong, who created a permanent exhibit about the laundries for the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum in the Gaslamp District.
