New Life Chinese Laundry in North Park

Peter Hui snapped a piece of brown paper off the roll on the table, deftly wrapped it around a stack of shirts and tied the package with reinforced tape. He placed it on a shelf filled with other neat packages near the front door of the New Life Chinese Laundry in North Park.

Peter Hui, 67, retired five years ago and sold New Life Chinese Laundry, but he still lives across the street and volunteers at the laundry most mornings.
A Chinese laundry is a rare sight today in San Diego.

But there was a time . .

“There were over a 100 Chinese hand laundries in San Diego,” says John LeeWong, who created a permanent exhibit about the laundries for the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum in the Gaslamp District.
