What if the biggest threat to Christianity in America isn't atheism — but a religion that sounds Christian? In this documentary, we examine Moralistic Therapeutic Deism (MTD), the belief system identified by sociologist Christian Smith that has influenced how many Americans understand God, morality, happiness, and salvation.
Christian Smith's research, published in Soul Searching, examined the religious and spiritual lives of thousands of American teenagers. The research identified a pattern of beliefs that sounded Christian but differed significantly from historic Christian teaching.
This documentary breaks down the five beliefs of Moralistic Therapeutic Deism: the belief that God exists and watches over humanity, that God primarily wants people to be good and nice, that life's goal is happiness, that God is mainly needed during difficult moments, and that good people ultimately go to heaven.
We explore how these ideas entered American church culture, including the influence of seeker-sensitive Christianity, therapeutic culture, changing preaching styles, and the gradual softening of difficult biblical doctrines such as sin, repentance, judgment, discipleship, and the exclusivity of Christ.
The documentary also examines the consequences of replacing the gospel with a comfortable version of Christianity — including declining commitment, weakened discipleship, reduced urgency for evangelism, and confusion about biblical doctrine.
But this story is ultimately about hope and recovery.
The real gospel has not disappeared. Christians can return to Scripture, recover biblical teaching, pray for faithful pastors, and rediscover the transforming message of Jesus Christ.
The fake religion has a name. Knowing its name may be the first step toward recognizing and rejecting it.
