Juneteenth (officially Juneteenth National Independence Day) is an annual federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Observed on June 19, it marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved Black Americans that the Civil War had ended and they were free.
