Edward Dowling, who was pivotal to the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous, sees a link between 12 step programs and Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas. She notes Pope Leo’s own ministry to alcoholics and other addicts during his priesthood, and sees a remarkable overlap in the themes.
