Behind the story
From Angela Lu Fulton: I first met Pastor Wong Siu-yung in Hong Kong during the 2019 anti-extradition law protests. He was part of a network of pastors who had been vocal in supporting democracy in Hong Kong, at one point standing between protesters and police singing "Sing Hallelujah to the Lord."
The next time I saw him was in Taipei, Taiwan, where he had sought refuge after the draconic national security law went into effect in 2020. He was pastoring other exiled Hong Kongers in Taiwan and shared that he hoped to help them bless their new home.
But this week, Wong has moved again to England after two frustrating years trying and failing to get permanent residency in Taiwan. The democratic island’s government has made it extremely difficult for Hong Kongers to settle.
Despite the upheaval of the past several years, Wong continually points to a greater hope and a greater home than what we find on this earth. One that won’t disappoint or fall into the wrong hands. "Christians need to know their hope is only in God," he said.
