Happy St Patrick’s Day! with Pastor Carlos

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

We’re honored to have Bishop John Dolan presiding at the 9:30 AM Mass today. Welcome Bishop! Thank you to all of you who have been planning and volunteering at the various events this weekend to celebrate our patron saint, St. Patrick!

As I was reflecting on the life of St. Patrick, and how early in life he was captured and taken as a slave to Ireland, it struck me he was a victim of what we call today human trafficking. The numbers of people in modern-day slavery are in the millions, and most of them, like Patrick, are being exploited for labor. Let us pray to St Patrick for their liberation.

If you want to know more about this reality in San Diego, and become involved, you can look up the organization, Children of the Immaculate Heart. It is the one Catholic organization that serves women survivors of human trafficking.

That evil that God allowed in Patrick’s life led him to a conversion: "And there [in captivity] the Lord opened my mind to be aware of my lack of faith so that, even then, it would be possible for me to remember my transgressions and return with all my heart to the Lord, my God."

God rescued him from slavery, and he was able to return to his land, but after being ordained priest, and bishop, he was sent back to Ireland, no longer as a slave, but to preach the Gospel. He was exposed to many dangers, but traveled all over Ireland, and eventually his efforts proved very successful in the how the Irish people embraced the faith.

God Bless, Fr. Carlos, OSA
