The NAE encourages increased understanding and reconciliation between those of different faiths and backgrounds, and it laments efforts that work against a just and peaceful society. The plans recently announced by a Florida group to burn copies of the Qu’ran on September 11 show disrespect for our Muslim neighbors and would exacerbate tensions between Christians and Muslims throughout the world. The NAE applauds U.S. Congress’ bipartisan passage of legislation to reduce the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine offenses last week. The bill passed the Senate in March and now awaits President Obama’s signature. (read more)
September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). The month’s designation is sponsored by FEMA’s Ready Campaign in partnership with Citizen Corps and the Advertising Council, and its purpose is to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and communities. Friends’ Events
The Evangelical Environmental Network is sponsoring a concert for the Gulf Coast on Aug. 15 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wharf in Orange Beach, Ala. Numerous contemporary artists, including Big Daddy Weave, Alicia, and Mark Harris, have committed to leading the time of worship. The funds raised will go towards purchasing groceries for those who have been most affected by the oil crisis. (read more)
The Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) will celebrate its 20th anniversary in Chicago where the organization began as a gathering of like-minded people and training around best practices in the development community.
