If you are following the presidential campaigns, you have probably heard a lot of talk about which candidate “evangelical Christians” will support. Republican candidates are concerned since evangelicals are perceived to be mostly republican. But in truth, evangelicals, and “Christian” voters in general, are much more diverse. In fact there are growing numbers of Christians who are concerned about issues such as peacemaking, poverty, ecological degradation, and the like. These people are mostly young (twenty or thirty somethings) and are more serious about what it means to be authentic Christians in this world.
One question these young Christians ask is what is the meaning of Christmas? If it is truly about the birth of the Son of God who came to “proclaim good news to the poor, freedom to the prisoners, and set the oppressed free” (Lk. 4:18), then how should we celebrate it? If Mary proclaimed that “the hungry are filled, and the rich are sent away empty” (Lk. 1:53), then what does Christmas mean?
