What Is Eastern Orthodoxy?

Come and Find Out at St. Spyridon Church on June 2

Do you know the difference between the Eastern Orthodox churches and the Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant and Anglican churches? Can you identify points of disagreement and what all these churches have in common? Are you aware of the significance of icons in Eastern Orthodox worship and what is distinctive about the Orthodox liturgy? Have you come to appreciate the contribution that the Eastern Orthodox tradition is making in the worldwide quest for Christian unity? You are cordially invited to a presentation on “Eastern Orthodox Churches—History, Liturgy and Icons” on Saturday, June 2, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church 3655 Park Boulevard, San Diego 92103 (just north of Balboa Park). This event is sponsored by the Faith, Order and Witness Committee of the Ecumenical Council of San Diego County.

The featured speaker is the Very Rev. Fr. Archpriest George Morelli, Ph.D. Fr. Morelli is the assistant pastor at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and is president of the Eastern Orthodox Clergy Conference of San Diego. He earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in personality/clinical psychology at New School University in New York City. Dr. Morelli has thirty-four years of pastoral experience. For over thirty years he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology and theology. He has clinical experience in cognitive-behavior therapy, child clinical neuropsychology, chaplaincy and pastoral-spiritual counseling.

The Saturday program on Orthodoxy includes lectures by Fr. Morelli, illustrated by power point. During the 12:00 noon-12:45 lunch hour the beautiful icons of St. Spyridon Church will be viewed and explained. A suggested donation of $8.00 will include lunch.
