Vatican approves Crystal Cathedral purchase

The Vatican has given its formal approval for the Diocese of Orange to acquire the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove for $57.5 million, the Orange County Register reports.

The Vatican’s approval of the purchase came on Nov. 28 with a nihil obstat, which in Latin means “nothing stands in the way," the Register reported Nov. 30.

Crystal Cathedral Ministries filed for bankruptcy in October 2010 after it was unable to pay more than $50 million owed to its creditors. On Nov. 18, a federal bankruptcy judge selected the Diocese of Orange’s $57.5 million bid for the cathedral and its accompanying campus. The Crystal Cathedral will now be converted to use as the new diocesan cathedral.

Msgr. Douglas Cook, a canon lawyer and rector of Holy Family Cathedral in Orange, the diocese’s current cathedral, told the Register that Vatican approval took a long time.

Among the items sent by diocesan officials to the Vatican was “a thick dossier detailing its financial plan to purchase the Crystal Cathedral,” Msgr. Cook told the newspaper.

"The Vatican's Congregation for Clergy Office then came back to us with some questions they had," the monsignor told the Register. "We sent the answers and shortly thereafter, received the approval."

"The Vatican's role is basically to make sure that we have thought of everything – the rationale and the financial plan – before we undertake something of this magnitude," the Register quoted Msgr. Cook as saying.
