The
cardinal, who endured long years of imprisonment and forced labor for
fidelity to Christ, met with the pope during a private audience. He was
ordained 70 years ago on April 7, 1956.
In
a wide-ranging pastoral letter, the cardinal addressed the highly
divisive conflict and its spiritual undercurrents, proposing a response
based on the prophetic vision of the new Jerusalem.
One
of the U.S. Church’s most prominent public figures contends that it’s
not the role of the Church’s leaders to make a final determination about
whether a particular war is just or not.
