Separation of church and state is an idea that originated in our country not to disallow churches from having any influence upon the state; rather, the idea originated in order to disallow any one particular church from having too much influence upon the state. The First Amendment states clearly, “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” An “established religion/church” was/is a particular church denomination that is approved by the state to be the “official religion” of that state. Some examples would be: the Church of England in England, Sunni Islam in Afghanistan, Buddhism in Cambodia, the Evangelical Lutheran church in Denmark, Judaism in Israel, the Catholic Church in Liechtenstein, and many others.
Here in America right now we have a “Christian Nationalist” movement that very much wants to have one particular Christian denomination, “Evangelical Christian Nationalist,” become the official established church of this country; and wants that church to merge its powers with the powers of the U.S. government — this is called “dominionism.” This movement has a strong impact on the Republican Party today. However, truth be told, their goal is specifically prohibited by the First Amendment of our Constitution.
