Faith Leaders Press Conference and Rally - August 18, 11 AM

SDOP Faith Leaders Press Conference and Rally responding to Charlottesville

Faith in the Lord and in His word, does not open a path where everything is easy and quiet for us; it does not take away the storms of life.  Faith, in short, is not a loophole from the problems of life, but it sustains our journey and gives it meaning.” ~ Pope Francis, Aug 14, 2017

In the wake of the recent horrific acts of racism and hate in Charlottesville, VA, the SDOP clergy gathered to pray, reflect, and plan. Though much is still evolving, please mark your calendars for 11:00 am this coming Friday, August 18th for a Faith Leaders Press Conference at St Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, San Diego, CA 92103.

Bishop Terrell Fletcher, of the City of Hope International Church, painted the picture for us - a media event with white faith leaders in front surrounded by faith leaders of color, standing together in solidarity against hate and the long-term struggle of dismantling white supremacy. Father Neal Wilkinson “Father Pepe” of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, said “it is time for people to get out of the boat and overcome their fear as Peter did.”

The work of confronting racism in all its forms and ugliness is hard work and we will all need courage and grace to build the beloved community. As former President Barak Obama said, quoting from Nelson Mandela's 1994 autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, “…no one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

Please do your best to help us get the word out to your networks. We will also be reaching out to elected officials to stand with us.
